Emerging Youth Worker Pathway

Are you interested in youth work and looking for an opportunity to learn alongside an experienced and supportive team?

PACT's Emerging Youth Worker Pathway is for people who want to explore youth work, gain practical experience and grow in their ability to walk alongside tamariki and rangatahi.


PACT is a Christian youth organisation serving young people in South Auckland. Our approach is relational, strengths-based, culturally responsive and grounded in our values of whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, real, fun, growth and faith.

Who We Are Looking For

This opportunity may suit you if you:

  • Have a genuine interest in supporting tamariki and rangatahi.

  • Are reliable, teachable and open to coaching.

  • Can build warm, respectful and appropriate relationships.

  • Want to grow personally, spiritually and professionally.

  • Are willing to learn within PACT's Christian kaupapa and values.

  • Are committed to safe, ethical and culturally responsive practice.

  • Can commit to the agreed placement days for one school term.

All participants must complete PACT's application, interview, safety-checking and police-vetting processes.

The Initial Placement

The pathway begins with an unpaid, voluntary learning placement lasting one school term, usually eight to ten weeks.


Participants commit up to two agreed days each week, depending on programme timetables and suitable learning opportunities. These days primarily involve shadowing experienced youth workers, participating in training and reflective practice, and gradually becoming involved in activities under close supervision.


The placement may include:

  • Shadowing experienced PACT youth workers.

  • Supported involvement in a nominated youth programme.

  • Youth-work training and professional-development opportunities.

  • Regular coaching and reflective practice.

  • Learning about safeguarding, professional boundaries and ethical practice.

  • Developing culturally responsive and mana-enhancing ways of working.

  • Exploring personal strengths, faith and a possible future in youth work.

Participants are additional to PACT's normal staffing and are not responsible for independently delivering programmes or replacing paid employees. This is an unpaid placement. PACT may reimburse reasonable, pre-approved expenses incurred while taking part in placement activities.

What May Happen Next

At the end of the placement, we will meet with each participant to reflect on their learning, provide feedback and discuss possible next steps.

 

Selected participants may be invited to continue their development through the Certificate in Youth Development and Leadership, delivered by 24-7 YouthWork in partnership with Laidlaw College. This part-time, faith-based Level 3 qualification combines youth-development learning, Christian formation and practical experience.


PACT may contribute towards or cover the course fee and provide a supervised practicum placement. Places in the study pathway are limited and depend on suitability, commitment, available funding and meeting the provider's enrolment requirements.


From time to time, part-time employment opportunities may also become available at PACT. Completing the voluntary placement or study pathway does not guarantee paid employment.
